New Mercedes-Benz eActros brings all-electric benefits to haulage and delivery sectors

Mercedes-Benz has launched the new all-electric, battery-powered eActros, boosting the electrification of its heavy-duty truck range - a truck that is likely to appeal to many Mercedes-Benz fleet owners looking to offer their customers Better service. Zero-emission, CO2-neutral, electronic freight and delivery services.

Parallel to the German manufacturer's pioneering work in hydrogen-based fuel cell technology, the new eActros is intended primarily for heavy-duty distribution transport.

The new eActros is the first heavy-duty truck from Mercedes-Benz to bring electric appeal to its Irish fleet. Fergus Conheady, Commercial Vehicles Sales Manager at Mercedes-Benz Ireland, described the new eActros as “yet another example of what Mercedes-Benz does.” Mercedes-Benz remains a leading innovator in heavy commercial vehicle development status.

eActros was first presented to the public in 2018 and underwent intensive research and customer testing before series production. The model being launched on Irish roads is the eActros 300 4×2 truck, which draws its energy from three battery packs (105kWh each). There is also the eActros 400 6×2, with four battery packs with a capacity of 105 kWh each. The technical core is its drive – an electric shaft with two integrated electric motors and a two-speed transmission.

The batteries are housed in a protective aluminum casing under the frame and have a total capacity of 315 kW and a range of up to 300 kilometers (WLTP). When connected to a 160kW DC charger, charging time is reported to be between 20 and 80 per cent in just 75 minutes. The 400 6×2 model has a cruising range of up to 400 kilometers and can be charged from 20% to 80% in 100 minutes.

As the first mass-produced star electric truck, the eActros heralds a new era for the German manufacturer. Numerous standard features include: electric braking system with ABS and ASR, predictive powertrain control, cruise control, lane departure warning, attention assist, fifth-generation Active Brake Assist 5 emergency braking system with pedestrian detection and external Acoustic vehicle warning systems sound warning sounds to pedestrians and cyclists.

Driver-focused features in the M Cab's 'Classic Space' cabin include automatic climate control, a fully suspended driver's seat and Side Guard Assist, which replaces the traditional main exterior rear view with a mirror-cam dashboard display mirrors and wide-angle exterior mirrors.

Due to its low-noise drive, it is said to be particularly suitable for nighttime deliveries. However, for many fleet operators it is particularly attractive for out-of-hours use as it reduces the pressure on the road network caused by peak hour use.
